Plymouth History
The city of Plymouth, is in the largest city in Devon, and lies on the estuary
of the River Tamar and the River Tavy, which flows in to it. The River Tamar
forms the natural border between the two counties of Devon and Cornwall. To
the west of the river is Saltash and to the east of the river is the city of
Plymouth. Then to the east of the city is the River Plym hence the name, Plymouth
which means the 'mouth of the plym'. The city has also been known as Plimmue
in 1231, and Plummuth in 1235.
Much of the history of Plymouth has been closely related to its coastal location.
Hence the city is associated with explorers, war and other navel and shipping
activities. The city also has the largest naval docks in the south west of England.
